The Chrysler Museum: Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of Flowers
The Chrysler Museum: Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of FlowersThough he is best known today as one of the twentieth century’s leading photographers, Edward Steichen began his artistic career as a painter. This exhibition features his most grand and ambitious effort in that medium: In Exaltation of Flowers. This large-scale mural, which measures ten feet high and nearly forty feet wide altogether, comes to the Chrysler on loan from Art Bridges. The mural’s seven panels are paired with works from the Chrysler’s rich photography and decorative arts holdings that illuminate Steichen’s photographic career. The works also highlight the broader impact of the figures depicted in the painting, including Isadora Duncan, Mercedes de Cordoba, and Charles Lang Freer. Also included are examples from the Chrysler’s holdings of Camera Work, an influential art and photography journal published by Alfred Stieglitz.’ More information. -The Chrysler MuseumFebruary 23, 2021 — May 30, 2021
The Boca Museum - Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of Flowers
The Boca Museum - Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of FlowersSeven large interconnected murals were created for the Meyer family for a home they never used. The large, gold-leafed murals are filled with portraits of Steichen's friends and their floral counterparts, making this project a particularly personal one for the artist. Now on view at the Boca Museum through January 3, 2021.
The Bitter Years, Waassertuerm Gallery
The Bitter Years, Waassertuerm Gallery“The Bitter Years is the last exhibition Edward Steichen curated as the Director of the Photography Department of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.It is a testimony to documentary photography, featuring over 200 images from one of the largest collective projects in the history of photography: the documentation of rural America during the Great Depression by the Farm Security Administration (FSA).Fifty years after its opening at MoMA, The Bitter Years has now found a permanent home in Dudelange, Luxembourg, on the site of a former steel mill, in the stunning Waassertuerm gallery, an old water tower, next to the Centre national de l'audiovisuel (CNA).Wishing to create a lively platform for discussion and creation around the heritage collection, the CNA combines Steichen's selection of FSA images with events and temporary photographic exhibitions organized at Pomhouse, the former pumping station adjacent to the water tower. Waassertuerm + Pomhouse thus form a space of dialogue between the historic collection and contemporary image making.”More information about The Bitter Years at Waassertuerm Gallery. The Steichen Collections by MNHAImage: © CNA/Romain Girtgen
