<image:caption>Edward Steichen was only 21 when he first visited Paris in 1900. The following year, he met Auguste Rodin, who agreed to let him come to his studio over a twelve-month period to photograph the sculptures. He also took several portraits of the master sculptor, one of the most famous remains the profile view of Rodin opposite The Thinker with the Monument to Victor Hugo behind them. In 1908, Rodin asked Steichen to photographs his Monument to Balzac “by moonlight”. Rodin was profoundly moved when he saw the prints: “Your photographs will make the world understand my Balzac.” The same year, Steichen held a show of Rodin drawings at the 291 Gallery in New York. The Rodin Museum preserves the memory of their privileged relationship. The Museum keeps almost 90 prints (a majority of vintage platinotype, gum bichromate and carbon prints) and 30 letters written from 1901 to 1937 by Steichen, his wife Clara and his daughter Mary. The Museum’s archives contain valuable information related to Edward Steichen, Auguste Rodin, their artworks, careers, and their friendship. More from the Musee Rodin, Paris. <image:title>Exhibitions - Jazz-Age Silks: The Stehli Silks Americana Collection, 1925–1928 at the Met</image:title>
<image:caption>Through April 8, 2025 at the Met. In 1926, Edward Steichen was commissioned to photograph a series of images to be transformed into silk fabrics for garments. He agreed to the project on the condition that he wouldn’t be limited to photographing only "flowers and garlands." As he did throughout his career, Steichen pushed the boundaries of convention by incorporating everyday objects such as sugar lumps, nails, and tacks into his modern, unexpected designs. These unconventional choices resulted in silk patterns that were both innovative and timeless, capturing the elegance and spirit of the Jazz Age. This fresh approach to textile design can now be admired at The Met's exhibition Jazz Age Silks: The Stehli Silks Americana Collection 1925–1928, showcasing the ingenuity of Steichen’s and others' artistic visions. Each fabric tells a story, transforming everyday materials into striking designs that remain as relevant today as they were nearly a century ago.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Though he is best known today as one of the twentieth century’s leading photographers, Edward Steichen began his artistic career as a painter. This exhibition features his most grand and ambitious effort in that medium: In Exaltation of Flowers. This large-scale mural, which measures ten feet high and nearly forty feet wide altogether, comes to the Chrysler on loan from Art Bridges. The mural’s seven panels are paired with works from the Chrysler’s rich photography and decorative arts holdings that illuminate Steichen’s photographic career. The works also highlight the broader impact of the figures depicted in the painting, including Isadora Duncan, Mercedes de Cordoba, and Charles Lang Freer. Also included are examples from the Chrysler’s holdings of Camera Work, an influential art and photography journal published by Alfred Stieglitz.’ More information. -The Chrysler Museum February 23, 2021 — May 30, 2021</image:caption>

<image:caption>Seven large interconnected murals were created for the Meyer family for a home they never used. The large, gold-leafed murals are filled with portraits of Steichen's friends and their floral counterparts, making this project a particularly personal one for the artist. Now on view at the Boca Museum through January 3, 2021.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - The Bitter Years, Waassertuerm Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>“The Bitter Years is the last exhibition Edward Steichen curated as the Director of the Photography Department of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It is a testimony to documentary photography, featuring over 200 images from one of the largest collective projects in the history of photography: the documentation of rural America during the Great Depression by the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Fifty years after its opening at MoMA, The Bitter Years has now found a permanent home in Dudelange, Luxembourg, on the site of a former steel mill, in the stunning Waassertuerm gallery, an old water tower, next to the Centre national de l'audiovisuel (CNA). Wishing to create a lively platform for discussion and creation around the heritage collection, the CNA combines Steichen's selection of FSA images with events and temporary photographic exhibitions organized at Pomhouse, the former pumping station adjacent to the water tower. Waassertuerm + Pomhouse thus form a space of dialogue between the historic collection and contemporary image making.” More information about The Bitter Years at Waassertuerm Gallery. The book, in which all of the photographs from the exhibition are reproduced, was first produced by a magazine publisher and sold in hundreds of thousands on newsstands and in airport shops. In more recent years, the book has been published by the Museum. The present Thirtieth Anniversary Edition was prepared from original photographs with all new duotone plates in 1986.” From MoMA.</image:caption>

<image:title>Life & Work - In Exaltation of Flowers (1911-1914)</image:title>
<image:caption>Seven large interconnected murals were created for the Meyer family for a home they never used. The large, gold-leafed murals are filled with portraits of Steichen's friends and their floral counterparts, making this project a particularly personal one for the artist. The murals spent many years in storage and are now owned by the Art Bridges Foundation, which conserved them and have made them available for display in several museums across the United States.</image:caption>
